Nathaniel Manista e151a21ee4 Fix and enable unused-variable lint 
In _server.py start_server_batch_result is removed because
start_server_batch can only ever fail as a result of a programming
defect in gRPC Python and not the application. This differs from some
analogous-appearing points in _channel.py where the result of
start_client_batch is checked because at those points it is possible
for a failure to indicate a programming defect on the part of the
application.

Paul Marks 3a5bba0a20 Connect to "localhost" from interop clients. 
This is for compatibility with IPv6-only environments; see the Google
bug b/32531998.

Note that InteropClient.cs and http2_client.cc don't appear to be tested
by our internal branch, but I've included them for consistency.

In those places where we return an object that implements two
interfaces (let's say P and Q), consistently describe it as a "P-Q"
rather than once mentioning that it is a P and describing it as a "Q"
for the rest of prose.

ncteisen af2c01e73e Expect INTERNAL in Python negative interop client 
The test now expects to receive StatusCode.INTERNAL when it receives a
RST_STREAM from the server in order to comply with
https://github.com/grpc/grpc/blob/master/doc/PROTOCOL-HTTP2.md

Also added wait for ready behavior on the client channel.

them. There's likely some silliness w.r.t. interned slices and
references to them outliving their associated call objects, but we are
just ignoring that for now.

ncteisen d70c8bb871 Implement wait-for-ready behavior in Python stress and qps client 
The clients now block until the channel is in the READY state. This
fixes some test flakiness issues we have had.

Nathaniel Manista 8b223e2986 Correct Python cancel_after_begin interop test 
It was a mistake that requests might be sent; the test specification
calls for no requests to be sent. It was a mistake that the response
future's cancelled() method was called; the cancelled() method returns
something more like "was this object's cancel() method called earlier?"
than "did the RPC terminate with status code CANCELLED?". Since it's
something that we'd well enough like to work I've retained the
cancelled() call with a different failure message.

The server cleanup method is untested.

The join() function that exposes it is only called by the internals of threading.py, and we don't hold a reference to the server thread to explicitly join() it, and I'm not sure we should add a reference just for this purpose.

Moreover, the threading.py only calls join(None), the code path in question isn't even exercised by the internals of threading.py. Its just there to make sure we properly follow the join(timeout) semantics.

Nathaniel Manista b292a8502e Refactor channel call management 
The requirement that any created managed call must have operations
performed on it is obstructing proper handling of the case of
applications providing invalid invocation metadata. In such cases the
RPC is "over before it starts" when the very first call to
start_client_batch returns an error.

Masood Malekghassemi d953959e2b Enable split code generation 
To support magical internal build processes, the pb2 files need to be
split into pure-proto and gRPC parts. This performs that split and
further fixes bad module names in the test harness that interfered with
the intended test implementation.

An unfortunate side effect, due to limitations of protoc and holdover
behavior we must support in major version 1.x, is that trash files are
generated in split generation. This shouldn't be a problem in normal
protoc plugin use.

Add a RecordingThreadPool that inherits from Executor, contains a
ThreadPoolExecutor and has an extra method 'was_used' to indicate if
submit method was ever called i.e. if the thread pool was ever used.

Masood Malekghassemi fd9cc106f3 Be more intelligent about Cython in grpcio 
Before, Cython would *need* to be imported immediately if generated
files did not already exist. Now, missing generated files will trigger a
`setup_requires` inclusion of Cython and defer cythonization until
extension build-time. If cythonization was specified via environment
variable and setup could not find Cython, the extensions are poisoned
instead of blocking non-extension commands from running.

Before we patched the link command, now we just patch `spawn` as an
updatable catch-all solution to ARG_MAX limitations on bash for MSYS and
MinGW and friends.

Ken Payson 136ea365e3 Hold onto the GIL in __dealloc__ functions 
When a child thread triggers __dealloc__ as part of a thread being
joined, the thread is already considered to be "joined", and so
releasing the GIL can allow the main thread to proceed to exit,
which introduces shutdown race conditions/memory leaks.

Ken Payson f4c1bff0d8 Moved grpc_shutdown to end of Py_Finalize() 
We currently rely on the __del__ method of a module scope object
to call grpc_shutdown().  __del__ methods are not guaranteed
to be called, and furthermore there are no guarantees about
ordering, leading to shutdown race conditions.  This moves
grpc_shutdown to Py_Finalize(), which gets called after the
Python context is completely cleaned up.

Turns out that Python namespace packages may be asymmetrical. The contents of a
particular package that was installed first (here grpcio) appears to retain its
contents in the installation directory when all other distributions declare
that package as a namespace package (here grpcio-tools).

Ken Payson ed7428526c Added cleanup to the server thread's join method. 
When the Python Interpreter exits, it first attempts to join any
outstanding threads.  This is problematic if a server is created
as a top-level variable or referenced by a reference cycle, as join()
will hang.  This adds cleanup behavior to the server thread's join().

alex b0f676b050 Fix memory leak reading from python ByteBuffer. 
Fixes #5913.

`grpc_byte_buffer_reader_next` is documented as 'Caller is responsible
for calling gpr_slice_unref on the result', but that wasn't happening.

This commit adds the missing call to `gpr_slice_unref`.

David Garcia Quintas a301eaade8 Allow servers to select compression level via initial MD. 
Setting the newly added compression_level field of
grpc_op::send_initial_metadata by a server now has the effect of
applying that compression level for the subsequent call messages leaving
the server. The ultimate meaning of the level depends on the client's
supported compression algorithms.

For some definition of "smart"... client_channel simply passes along
pollset/pollset_set, removing the need to instantiate a pollset_set in
the subchannel_call_holder: it's now up to the LB policies to handle the

Added the ability to create channels from client_channel_factory. This

Masood Malekghassemi 7d8ac466d6 Don't allow precompiled binaries in tests 
Before it was possible for precompiled binaries of the Cython layer to
be downloaded during a test run if the metadata of the host machine's
gRPC Python project matched the metadata of a file in cloud storage. Now
we disallow this, and fix a bug where the relevant environment variable
was ineffectual.

Matthew Iselin 1824f0519f Add HTTP request parsing. 
This extends the existing http parser to support requests as well as responses.

httpcli continues to exist and work as it has previously, though in the new
directory src/core/http (to reflect the fact the directory now contains code
relevant to parsing requests, which httpcli would not generally involve itself
in).

Leifur Halldor Asgeirsson b9501bcb0b Python 3: fix a bytes/str runtime issue 
On python3, in grpc._links.service._Kernel._on_service_acceptance_event,
there is a runtime TypeError:

```
_on_service_acceptance_event
    group, method = service_acceptance.method.split('/')[1:3]
TypeError: 'str' does not support the buffer interface
```

It is fixed by using a bytes literal (`b'/'`) instead of a string literal.

This exposed another issue in grpc.beta._server where an exception was being
raised with a bytes literal for a message (a string should be used instead.)

alex ce37938255 Make grpc-python ByteBuffer.bytes() linear cost. 
Currently ByteBuffer.bytes() reads from the underlying grpc byte_buffer
a slice at a time, and appends each to a Python string (bytes). In
Python strings are immutable, so appending creates a new string by
copying the previous data.  This means the current implementation is
quadratic.

The effect is very noticeable when messages have repeated (or large)
string fields.  We traced execution between two services and observed
that when the payload size approached 600kb, the receiving service took
~10s at full CPU to read a response that had taken fractions of a second
the send over the network.

This commit changes ByteBuffer.bytes() to use an intermediate bytearray,
instead of strings, for the in-progress bytes.  Once all slices are
read, the buffer is converted to a string.

Christian Svensson ce2a2d041d ssl_channel_credentials to use None by default 
Since the default behavior is quite sane, support just calling ssl_channel_credentials() without explicitly specifying ssl_channel_credentials(None, None, None).

This changes the pattern ssl_channel_credentials(server_crt, None, None) to ssl_channel_credentials(server_crt)

Christian Svensson e73e9e1a98 Allow directly specifiying connection path 
Make insecure_channel / secure_channel accept port=None and only use the
'host' argument. This enables using UNIX sockets without mangling the
path of the socket.

Masood Malekghassemi fd5a3ef9d5 Don't use a pipe for capturing in test runner 
Apparently Python can call arbitrarily deallocation code whenever its
allocator is invoked, which can cause output from gRPC core to stderr,
which can happen on the thread that is emptying the stderr pipe, thus
causing the stderr pipe to deadlock on itself.

Masood Malekghassemi cbd1bce45a Fix two ways tests can hang 
Both have to do with the test runner's handling of the tests. With one
it's the read thread somehow outliving the other threads (e.g. with
ctrl-C). The other is due to a filled OS-level pipe's buffer causing a
block while code is still holding the GIL in some gRPC core function. We
can't empty the buffer from Python because the GIL is held, and the OS
can't unblock because it's waiting for the buffer to get cleared:
deadlock.
